02 interceptor 232 low RPMs

Postby ejshama » Thu Jun 23, 2016 12:28 am

Gentlemen, I just bought a 2002 interceptor 232 with a mag 350 and bravo 1 outdrive. At WOT the tach says about 4150 and the speedometer hits 55mph. I don't have gps on the boat so don't know how true those are. I know that's very low for rpm's to be on this engine. This was with half tank of fuel and 100 lbs of gear and 350 lbs of people.
( that would be 3 people evenly dispersed). I use the boat at about 3200 to 3500 ft. elevation. What should I look at first? Thanks for any help you can give. Eddie

Oh it also has a 21p 14" stainless steel cupped prop.

The revs look a bit low, you should be able to hit about 4400-4600 at WOT with a 21P prop.
The tachs, and especially the speedos in boats are notorious at being inaccurate.
If you are doing 55mph at 4150rpm , I'd happy with that.

thanks for the response. I just thought that if the rpms were too low at wot that it was taxing the engine too much and i don't want to damage what seems to be a solid working engine. Do I need to worry about this.

Sounds like you're propped for low altitude ASL. Did you purchase the boat used from a low lying state? You'd probably be best off with a 19P prop.
Boatless, again.

Yup. x2 At 3200 feet you will need to drop a couple of pitch to get your rpm up to 44-4500. Gear ration on that drive will be 1:50 which is steep for altitude.

Rule of thumb. one number in pitch adds or subtracts about 200 R's. FYI
