New guy with my first Caravelle 242BR with a 8.1 Volvo DP

Postby roofxperts » Fri Jul 20, 2012 12:55 am

Hello to all, what a great idea & concept to have this site available, and what an awesome site it is. I have learned alot about Caravelle just in the last few days waiting to be confirmed, and I am sure I will be able to have any questions answered by the excellent group of members here on the site.

I have had 2 Sea Rays and a Bay Liner previous to this boat and they do not compare to the great ride of this boat with the 572 open exhaust rippin at 60 MPH., which leads me to my first of 2 questions. Anyone else have this set up I have with the Volvo 8.1 DouProp? This is my first Volvo Penta and I do not know to much about them. Next question is my dash is cracked, and from reading on the forum, other guy's have had this problem. Anyone know where I can get my hands on a dash?

Thanks in advance to all replies.

I had a 2006 242 with a Merc 496MAG 375HP Bravo 1 (see the avatar to the left) and loved the room, ride and over all size of the boat, not too big, but not too small.
If you have the GXi, then you have the 425HP, the Gi is the 375HP, either one is fine. You will love the tourqe of the big block. If you don't have trim tabs, then that would be next on my list.
With the Duoprop you will get on plane a little faster, because there is less "slip" compared to a single prop, but still not a deal breaker if it was a single prop Bravo.......

Volvo Penta are just a reliable as the Mercury/Mercruiser are, the problem you are going to encouter are parts and service.

Not that you won't be able to find parts or someone to work on the VP, it just your choices are going to be more limited as compared to the Mercury. This is not a deal breaker in my book......

I had no complaints with my 242, other than the engine bay was small on the starboard side due to the wall through.

About the dash cracking, mine did not have any cracks in it, so I guess i was lucky. Finding on is going to be tough. The last year the 242 was produced was 2009, so the 242's that are still out there are probably in real good shape with limited spare parts.

Post some pics of your 242.

Thanks Fly & Dan, those are some sweet rigs there in your picture window boxes, I will post some pics when I put her back in the water.

My wife & I did purchase here on July 1, 2012. We went last summer with no boat and we were salty we didn't keep the old 2004 Sea Ray 26BR. You know how this works? You have a boat a year or three and decide ya know what? we never use this much and we should sell, could use the $$$ too, then the summer after you get rid of it, you miss her, so I found this Caravelle, which I thought was in great shape for a 2005, (only 255 hrs.) but the other features sold her to us, 11 passenger, captin call, big 572 8.1L, dou prop, big platform, walk thru hull, Kenwood tunes, awesome LED., etc... It kind of reminds me of the Mirage back in late 1990's so we bought it.

I will have to check that HP on the 8.1, I have the Title in front of me. Is there any way to tell by VIN.# (VCN18087D505)???

I will get some pic's of her when I get a chance, you guy's have a great summer.

i'm sure you'll love her. and you can't go wrong with the big block. BTW, the 8.1 is 496 cubes.

Oh, crap, I thought the 572 cubic inch was 8.1. Thanks for the correction, kind of feel like an idiot :(

Since we are on that topic. Is a 502 mag a 496 (8.1) bored over 30/40 or 60? And how many cubes is a 572?

496 and 502 are totally different motors.
572 = 9.3 l
8.1 GXi 425 hp
8.1 GI 375 hp
2005 Interceptor 212
Volvo 5.0 GXi 270hp
21P 14.5 3B SS prop and 19P 4B SS for wakeboarding and tubing.

I have a 496HO, but would take a 502 over a 496. The 496 has cast internals and is a great engine if you leave it alone.
Now, if you wanna haul some ass, then the 502 is the ticket. The 502 has forged internal so it will last longer and not have the piston failure the 496's have when you start adding super-chargers/blowers to them.
Yes you can buy a Raylar kit for the 496 and boost your HP tp 550(+) but the 502 is going to put out more HP with less mechanical failures.
