04 Caravelle 176 - first timer

Postby brightFish81 » Mon Apr 23, 2012 9:41 am

Hey i just purchased a 04 176 thats in great shape and only 200hrs if that on the motor. Anything i should know from anyone who's owned this boat?

The one thing i may purchase is a bow filler cushion but I haven't had a lot of luck finding it online.

Thanks in advance!

Congrats on the new boat and joining the forum! You'll get a lot of info here. Check the classifieds or post for the bow filler cushion. Might be a hard find, if so, hit up an upholstery place, they can probably put one together for a fair price. Good luck!

Hey welcome! It might be really hard to find that filler cushion. I would say just go to a few local upholstery shops and get quotes. I am making one this year as well.

Its nice to see I'm not the only one on this forum with a 17ft and 3.0.
My boat is older than yours but prolly similar. So if you have any particular questions let me know.

Thanks everyone! I'm really excited to get it out on the water...the guy before me put a stainless prop on it and said with just him and a buddy got it close to 50mph.

how much would an upolstery shop charge for a bow filler cushion?

welcome & congrats! your speedo may tell you you're doing 50 MPH, but i can assure you that's not going to happen. they don't call them wishometers for no reason. if you test it with a GPS, you'll likely see 42-43 MPH. which is still pretty good for a 3.0 boat.

Thanks for the welcome!

Yeah I thought it was a little high but I'll still take 40+. Like you said pretty good for a 3.0....

There is one thing that I need to get done sooner rather than later and thats the gas shock on the sun pad/engine compartment.

I found one online but I'm hoping to find one at a local boat shop. Anyone have similar issues?

Sure, they go out after some time. I need to replace the two I have soon, most the time they're fine, sometimes they're stubborn. Not cool when you're looking at something and get whacked in the head.

Mine does 41 mph gps with 400lbs sand in the bow, full tank of gas, 2 200 lbs people, and 3 batteries lol with a 17p stainless prop, I bet if I swapped out to a 19 and tossed out that 400 lbs I could hit 45 easy. Might try that this year lol. Would be interesting to see. My boat is supposed to have those gas shocks, but it doesn't.

Mine went out in the previous boat. Took it to a couple of auto parts places as none of the boat shops had any. Turned out they had the exact one. Guy told me to replace them both, but of course I knew better. Turned out, of course, he knew what he was talking about (at least in my case). The new one was stronger than the old one on the other side, so it twisted the hatch some. You would think it wouldn't matter once it was up.

Congrats on the boat.
