1971 17' Caravelle (Whip Ray)

Postby muskey47 » Mon Nov 09, 2015 12:53 pm

Just got my project boat for the winter. Friends had a 1974 17' Caravelle Something...not cared for and in desperate need of repair.

should be a fun project.

If anyone has any info on this boat, please message me. I can't find anything.

So far, all i've done is wheel out the hull. The topside is in too bad of shape, will need sanding and new gelcoat.

That will be a nice looking boat once you are done with it. Best of luck!

Pretty sure it is a Sting Ray. http://boatspecs.iboats.com/Caravelle_B ... p/66b13840

Friends had a red one when I was growing up. You won't be finding any factory parts for that old girl. Most parts would be pretty generic anyway. Manufacturers didn't build their own gauges or hardware. You'll find stuff similar online or at a boat wrecker. You don't want to overspend on a project like this... it is not like it is a classic Mustang King Cobra. Good luck.

Just a little update.

the last weekend was perfect weather for some boat work (63 degrees on Sunday in Michigan in Feb.)

Started by removing all the dirt and foam

Then removing the motor, mounts, and trim

Next step will be the replacing of the stringers.

next step is to remove all the excess glass remains from the stringers/transom and then i think i'm going to flip the bottom over and paint it while it's lightweight and easy to maneuver!

Bottom barrier coat is going on...

interesting stuff...really easy to use. Minimum of 3 coats, then the bottom coat of antifouling.

so far, so good!
