Sandy.....

Postby taffy3 » Sat Nov 03, 2012 10:44 am

I thought I'd take a few minutes to post about a few things I've learned regarding the disaster still unfolding in New York City and the surrounding areas.

A neighbor of ours left this morning to deliver a dozen 5 gallon containers full of gasoline to his relatives down there. As many of you probably know there is a gasoline shortage/crisis down there and even people who have generators need fuel to run them.

Yesterday I tried unsuccessfully to call a credit union in Queens NY where I do some business. Phones were out.

Today I got through and spoke with a customer service rep. After I took care of the business aspect, we ended up having a long conversation about conditions in Queens.

I was told that people are primarily looking for gasoline and the credit union was nearly empty (at 10AM on a Saturday no less). There are still major power outages, buildings are without heat (flooded oil fired boilers won't work until repaired even when power is restored) many people are without water. ATM's are down, mass transit is still crippled (bus routes) due to traffic jams of people around gas stations and the subways/trains are still very limited, grocery stores/supermarkets out of food and power.....It goes on and on.

The person I spoke with told me that it's so bad that that the employees are looking at finding air mattresses and sleeping at the bank because there is power there and they have a couple of showers available. At least they will be able to clean up before they start work. The irony is that that there apparently isn't much for them to do, at least for now.

If you're so inclined say a prayer for the folks effected by this storm. New Yorkers tend to have this "we can take anything" attitude, but this is a very difficult situation in a very densely populated area. This is different.

Nicely done T3
As we discussed on another thread.
Everyone should do what they can to help in any way.
It will be the greatest gift they can give themselves.

Helping can be anything from money, to helping out, to saying a prayer, to just being thankful for what you have.

I saw on the news tonight that 38% of
gas stations in NYC still do not have fuel!
Lots of folks do not have power and temps are below freezing.

Didn't think fuel was the problem. The electricty to run the pumps was keeping them closed. Man I hope they have lots of fireplaces to huddle up to.

Good Job T3. You hear so much on the news about things but getting a first hand account is much more accurate. Prayers continuing to go up.

Lots of cleaning up to do, this will go on for a long time.

On the bright side, there were areas on the Jersey Shore that apparently escaped serious damage/flooding. We vacation every year for a few days at this hotel and were waiting to get a damage report. The link is below.
