The Drill: A happy reunion
Green Bay Press-Gazette - Posted: Dec. 6, 2007
Brett Favre was overcome with emotion and it wasn't because he'd been named Sports Illustrated's Sportsman of the Year this week.

He was given another award Thursday: the Make-A-Wish Foundation's Chris Greicius Celebrity Award for entertainers and athletes who go above and beyond the norm in granting the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions.

Since 1990, the Green Bay Packers have granted more than 90 wishes; nearly 65 of them from Favre.

Joining Favre at the brief Lambeau Field award ceremony after practice was Anna Walentowski, 9, from Neenah, who has battled a rare degenerative brain disorder.

"It's great to see her doing so well and looking so cute," said Favre, who granted Anna's wish by meeting her in the fall of 2004.

At the time, Favre was told Anna had little time left to live. Brett and his wife, Deanna, put a picture of the little girl on their refrigerator.

"Every day we looked at that picture and prayed for Anna and her family," Deanna wrote in her book, "Don't Bet Against Me."

Realizing that Anna had survived to meet him again three years later, Favre's eyes welled up Thursday.

"My wish is granted," said Favre, who then had to pause half a minute before he could continue to talk, and even then struggled. Shaking, Favre was comforted by Anna, who turned to give him a hug.

"Congratulations," she told him.

Embarrassed at the award, Favre clearly got back from Anna Thursday the thrill he gave her three years ago.

"I'm just so happy to see her here standing beside me," Favre said.

Thanks for sharing HP,
Believe it or not, Favre has a lot of fans in SC as well. Personally, I've never been a cheesehead,(diehard Raider  ) but he is one of my favorites to ever play the game. Great guy off the field and has had a fair amount of success on it.

I am originally from the Illinois / Wisconsin border, and always supported the Pack. I now live in Texas and their are a lot of Favre fans here as well.

I have long admired him for all the great things he's done off the field, mostly for kids since his own family has been touched as well. What a roll model!

Farve's class magnifies the embarrassment we here in Atlanta are experiencing.
