interceptor wot alarm.

Postby chambers1517 » Thu Jul 03, 2014 4:23 pm

I have an 08 Interceptor 232 with the 350 mag. When I run at wot I get a high pitched alarm. Sounds like the depth finder alarm but it only happens at high rpm. I can slow all the way to idle and the alarm continues to sound until I shift to neutral. All gauges look fine. Gear lube is ok also. Any ideas? Rpm never goes above 5000.

II am running a 21p vengance. Tack never reads above 5000. One weird thing I noticed today is I get 5000 rpm at wide open but it takes about 5 clicks back on the throttle for the rpm to start dropping. The tack seems to read smoothly through the entire range.

Has this prop got a rubber hub? It may be slipping causing the motor to over rev?
One you back off it stops slipping?

Strange! BUT, if it is truly an alarm I would NOT run her at WOT until I figured out what it is Sir. Is it a constant alarm or beeping? In dash depth soumder on HP is junk and goes off every once in awhile.

It is a constant alarm. Even when I slow down to idle it constantly sounds. I have to shift to neutral to make it stop. Oil pressure And everything is normal. I can run 4800 rpm with no issue but at 5000 the alarm sound and won't stop until I hift to neutral. I thought 5000 was ok on these engines. Does the high rev alarm require a neutral to reset. There is nothing to tell what exactly the alarm is.

HEading to the water, but, if you hit the rev limiter the engine should kick in and out as it knocks the RPMs back. Check your book for the sound of the alarm, should surely tell you what it is. OP and Temp OK wierd. Outdrive full? That has an alarm as well. OUtside those 3 things I don't think anything else has an alarm. Good Luck!!

OK, so I have an 05 with the 350 MAG. I also have the same alarm go off that sounds like the depth finder. On my boat its the low oil pressure alarm going off. The only way I've fixed it is to make sure the oil is always toped off as some burns on mine. Not much burn but with a small oil reservoir, mine will almost always go off if she's the slightest bit low. Might be an avenue to look down?

We are staying on a floating cottage on Lake Norris. I checked the book and it isaid. Over rev or drive lube level. Drive lube is at min so that may be it. Went to marina and drive oil was 9 bucks for 8 oz. Ill try that next. Thanks guys. I noticed as the revs increase the drive oil level goes down some.

More info on Mercruiser alarms:

Engine Guardian System ALARM SUMMARY
General Description
Engine Guardian is the focal point of the self-diagnostic strategy on these engines. It helps
protect the engine from possible damage that could result from several faulty conditions.
The system monitors the sensors incorporated on the engine and if a malfunction is
discovered, a fault description is stored in thePCMand available power is normally reduced.
By ensuring that engine output is at a low enough level, the engine is better protected from
thermally induced failures.
For example, if an open or short is found in any sensor, available power will be reduced to
90% of total, the AudioWarning System Alarmwill sound 2 beeps perminute (2 Bp/min) and
the Smartcraft gauges will display a warning lamp. In a seawater pump pressure low
condition, the maximum rpm will vary with the pressure and temperature of the engine and
could be limited to idle in extreme cases of overheating, a constant beep will sound and
Smartcraft gauges will display a warning lamp.
IMPORTANT: Engine Guardian cannot guarantee that engine damage will not occur
when adverse operating conditions are encountered. Engine Guardian is designed
to warn the operator of an adverse condition and to reduce power by limiting rpm in
an attempt to reduce possible engine damage. The boat operator is ultimately
responsible for proper engine operation.

Warning Chart
The engine warning system incorporates an audio alarm and, if installed, Smartcraft
Gauges System. When the key switch is turned to the ON position, the audio alarm will
momentarily activate to test thewarning system. The alarm should sound once if the system
is operable. This table is a guick guide, showingwhat warning output will accompany a fault.

So I took the boat out again after I filled the drive tank. I got up to 4000 rpm and the alarm came back on but as soon as I throttled back it went away. I ran awhile and slowly throttled up. I got all the way to 5000 with no more alarms. I ran about 10 mile between 3500 up to 5000 with no alarms. Ill try again tomorrow.

So, did you top off your gear lube? And you also made sure to top off with the same color lube? The hi performance lube is a different color than the standard stuff. Do you trim your drive a bit higher at 5K RPM than the lower R's? That would explain why the alarm only went off at WOT. You could also get a constant alarm (no beep) at WOT if a heat exchanger is partially clogged with silt, rocks, etc.
Boatless, again.

I think you may be right about trimming up more during high speed I Noticed I trimmed more as speed increased. That may explain why I was getting the alarm. I did topp off the drive.
