Selecting the right prop

The propeller on your boat has a big impact on the performance of your boat. This is the place to discuss this subject.

Selecting the right prop

Postby 02blkws6 » Sat Apr 27, 2013 6:29 am

Volvo Penta SX-C1 1.66 outdrive with a 5.0FL/302 4bbl
current prop is 14.25x19 and spins 4900-5000rpm
suggested operating rpm 4200-4600

I'm considering a new prop and want to get it right. The ebay link is what I have in mind.

I run the Mercury High Five 14.25X21 on my 5.0 MPI, it's great! It does a much better job towing wakeboards and tubes than the 3 blade Turbo 14.5X21 stainless prop that came with the boat. I lost about 2-3 mph on top end but I very rarely run it full throttle. The boat will plane at 18 mph while towing my kids and grandkids on a wakeboard and I can tow the young ones at 12 mph on a wakeboard.
I also tow 3 or 4 tubes at a time at around 20 mph without difficulty while slinging them from side to side.
Since you're over revving with the 19 pitch a 21 pitch should get you down to the recommended RPM for your engine in my opinion.

Remember: about 200 Rs per pitch which drops you 400 on a 3 blade = about 4500. Also about 200 Rs for extra blade times 2 equals another 400 on a 5 blade down to 4100. Just rule of thumb, have never experimented with the 5 blade, only a 4.

A Merc Revolution 4 in a 20P may do you very well. Find a friend with different ones or go to deltaprop.com. They will let you try a prop then return it if not right for used to be $25 restock which is far better then having to sell it on ebay. Good luck and you will LEARN from your experience

Also, keep in mind that if you are changing from Aluminum to SS in the same pitch (19 pitch aluminum to 19 pitch SS), you will also see a 100-200 RPM drop.

19 pitch ss

I've been doing some research about 5 blade props and the reviews that I've read weren't very good.

I'll probably just go with a 3 blade 21 pitch ss.

Anyone that's tested multiple 3 blade ss props, which one has performed best? I'm looking for it to be my light load top speed prop..

HP, actually I did not loose RPM when changing from 3 blade to 5 blade, if anything the RPM's went up a bit. The only thing I can attribute this to is 1/4" smaller diameter on the 5 blade.

Not sure what reviews you have read but almost everyone I know who has tried a 5 blade has had good things to say about them.

As for 3 blade props, unless top speed is your only concern then you should consider a 4 or 5 blade prop over a 3 blade. Top speed is the only thing 3 blade props do better and even then its a small advantage.

Modern 4 and 5 blade props are a big advantage over most 3 blade props.

It would be worth a bit more research before making a mistake.

Good Luck

I often wondered if the diameter being smaller would have an effect and now I know. Thanks Mike

If you are going to stay with a 3 blade 02blkws6 NOTHING can match the Merc ENERTIA in my humble opinion and those I have talked into trying it
