Dummy Q: tandem trailer brakes (for 206) electric or surge?

Postby msbendts » Fri May 04, 2012 12:04 pm

Ok...ignorant questions...

I'm assuming that the tandem trailers for the (2004-2009) Caravelle 206/207 series boats use a 7-pin electrical connector (vs. 4-pin)...right??

Do these trailers typically have electric brakes or surge brakes (or depends upon the trailer)???

Thanks!

Most likely your boat trailer, regardless of the trailer manufacturer, is going to be equipped with surge brakes. The 7 pin connector uses the middle pin to lock out the brakes when backing the trailer. The middle pin should be connected to the backup light circuit on the tow vehicle. It will engage a solenoid that inserts a pin behind the accuator and prevents the brakes from engaging

My 2004 trailer uses the 4 pin connector and surge brakes and all the boat trailers I have ever had and seen use the same.
Since the wheels are totally submerged on a boat trailer during launch and retrieval electric brakes are very rare; I would imagine they would have to be custom ordered.

Thanks...helpful...

Ok...helpful...didn't know if there were state regulations around trailer size/weight/axles which dictated surge vs. electronic.

Makes total sense that boat trailers in water doesn't bide well with electronic breaking...

...but is why I asked the Q!

Thanks!

Actually, my trailer has a 5 pin connector that I convert to the 7 pin for my truck. The 5th pin is the lockout for backing up

My '01 with surge brakes is a 4-pin flat (adapted to my 7-pin round truck), the backup lockout is a lever on the side of the hitch head.

It's probably a 5 pin (looks like 4 at a glance). The 5th is the backup light, which locks out the surge brakes so you can back it up.

Lots of flat-to-round connectors are for 4 wire -- avoid those if you need to buy one. Otherwise you will have to use the manual lock-out each time. You have to look close to make sure you are getting a 5 wire to 7 wire adapter.
