SX outdrive oil leak

Postby Scoots » Sat Apr 29, 2017 11:33 am

Saw some oil slicks last time we were out. Forgot about it till I was prepping to head out today. Decided to pull the plastic cover and this is what saw, saddening sight to say the least. Cant really tell where its coming from. 1, have any of you experienced something similar and what seal was it and 2, what do you folks recommend me do to pinpoint the seal thats leaking?

Did the shift shaft seal and the shift shaft housing O ring today. Ran if in fwd and reverse for about 1/2 hour and see no leaking. Heading to the river tomorrow, fingers crossed and anyone who would like to say a prayer, incantation, etc would be gladly accepted. :)

I didnt, it was all over under the cover and puddled as you can see. My best guess was the shaft seal and as I was removing it the inner part of the seal separated from the outer very easily so Im 98% sure that was the issue. Boat loaded, heading out now.

Forgot to mention that the out drive had water in it when drained. OD still worked fine, hope it didnt damage anything.

Took her out and all went well, except for the white caps due to 20mph winds when nothing like that was call for! Check the OD fluid this eve and see if she stayed sealed..

Hmmm...Water in the outdrive?!Was the oil emulsified? If yes you might be in trouble.

The new fluid was emulsified but I saw no leaks so Im hoping there was still water in the OD. Drained and filled again and was going to run it then had the no start problem. One thing after another.

Whats you guys opinion of running GL-5 fluid like Mobil1 but has limited slip additive? Id like to run something cheaper a few times to flush then hopefully get all the water out and then final with Volvo oil.

Make sure that you run a full synthetic 75W-90 GL-5 as per VP specs,I don't want to be a bearer of bad news but I think you might have to get the outdrive checked out,if there is any rust or pitting on the bearings, it will lead to a more catastrophic failure down the track.Just google water in the outdrive. You might be lucky but you need to look at the worse case scenario.May be just run it on the trailer and drain the gearoil again. Are you refilling her from bottom up?

Well I just cant find a definitive answer regarding auto gear oils rated gl5 with posi additive so Im not gonna run it. Best opinion I read was that marine oils have additives that allow the oil to emulsify or somewhat bond with the water instead of separating so the oil can still do its job. Closest place that sells VP oil is almost 20 miles away so Im picking that up later this week.
