Drive Lube and Engine Oil

Postby jkwcfd » Mon Apr 11, 2016 1:21 pm

Ok as you guys can see, Im getting the boat ready for the summer. Starting early so I am not rushing when summer comes. 2 questions, first; Do you need to use the recommended quick silver 4 cycle 25w-40 marine engine oil and do you need to use recommended quick silver high performance 90wt gear oil to change the drive oil? Motor is the 2007 350 Mag MPI with the Bravo1 drive. I want to do what is right so I thought I would get your opinions. Thanks!!

That is what I have used since new and I have had no issues. I dont care what anyone says there is a difference between marine and automotive applications. It does not cost that much more and you only have to do it once a year. Operating conditions are significantly different. Everyone that I know that has replaced parts with the automotive version has suffered the consequences.

Thank you sir for the quick response. I bought some quicksilver high performance 25-40wt from walmart. The only thing is it said four stroke on it. It also said For use in 4-cycle outboard, sterndrive and inboard engines. Is that the one I need? Its not the synthetic does it matter?

Yes that is the one. You motor is 4-stroke/4-cycle. I have never used the synthetic oil because my dealer told me there had been service reports stating that the synthetic was causing leaks. I have the same motor you do and always run the non synthetic. There may be someone on here that has used the synthetic and can attest to any issues.

And just a bit of info for you on the "quicksilver" in case you are not aware.... It is produced by Mercury, just branded differently and sold a little cheaper. Never had any issues with any of the Quicksilver products.

The key is doing the maintenance every year and typically you will not have a problem.
